What Is Solana Staking and How Does It Work?

Solana uses proof of stake to reach consensus. Instead of miners burning electricity, validators lock up SOL as collateral and propose or attest to new blocks. If a validator misbehaves or goes offline too often, part of its stake can be slashed.

Most SOL holders don't run validators themselves. Instead they delegate their SOL to a validator of their choice. Delegation keeps your tokens in your wallet โ€” you're lending voting weight, not custody. The validator's uptime and commission determine how much of the network's inflation rewards flow back to you.

Rewards accrue each epoch (roughly two to three days on Solana) and are auto-compounded unless you withdraw. Annualized yields vary with network participation and validator commission, so check the current rate in your wallet or a staking explorer rather than trusting fixed numbers.

Staked SOL isn't instantly liquid. When you deactivate a stake, it unlocks at the next epoch boundary โ€” plan around that delay if you may need the funds quickly. Some wallets and protocols offer liquid staking tokens (like jitoSOL or mSOL) that represent staked SOL and can be traded freely, at the cost of additional smart-contract risk.

On Dexana you can track staking positions alongside the rest of your portfolio, so rewards and principal stay visible in one dashboard.
