Solana Token Extensions: What Changed for Token Creators and Traders

Dexana Teamยท2026-10-16ยท4 min read

Solana's original SPL token standard was minimal โ€” Token-2022 ('Token Extensions') adds capabilities directly to the token program rather than requiring custom contracts.

Notable extensions: transfer fees (a token can charge a percentage on every transfer โ€” check this before trading, it affects round-trip cost), on-chain metadata (name/symbol/URI stored in the token itself, reducing reliance on off-chain registries), confidential transfers (balances and amounts encrypted โ€” aimed at institutional use), and permanent delegate (issuer retains transfer authority โ€” a red flag for traders: it means the issuer can move your tokens).

For traders, the practical checklist on any newer Solana token: does it use Token-2022, and which extensions are enabled? Transfer-fee tokens cost more to trade; permanent-delegate tokens carry issuer-control risk.

Dexana's swap tooling handles Token-2022 tokens โ€” but knowing what extensions a token carries is part of basic due diligence.
