What On-Chain Volume Actually Tells You (and What It Doesn't)

On-chain volume measures the value of tokens moved or traded on a blockchain. A spike often signals something happened โ€” but interpreting it takes more care than watching the number go up.

Volume up + price up: real buying pressure, usually. Volume up + price flat: heavy two-way trading โ€” could be accumulation, could be a whale selling into buys. Volume up + price down: distribution or panic.

The distortions: wash trading inflates volume without real demand โ€” a wallet trading with itself. Bot activity (arbitrage, MEV) adds volume that reflects no human conviction. And DEX volume misses everything happening on centralized exchanges โ€” on-chain shows a slice, not the whole market.

Useful reading: sustained volume growth over days means more than one spike; volume relative to a token's normal baseline matters more than absolute size; and volume on rising price with rising holder count is a stronger signal than any single metric alone.
