Grid Trading Explained: Profiting From Sideways Markets

A grid bot automates the oldest trade in the book: buy low, sell high, repeat. You define a price range and the bot places a ladder of buy orders below the current price and sell orders above it. Every time price crosses a rung, it fills one side and places an order on the other side โ€” harvesting small moves over and over.

Grids shine in ranging markets. When an asset chops sideways between support and resistance, each oscillation generates fills. In a strong trend the strategy degrades: a runaway rally leaves the bot holding sold positions, while a breakdown accumulates inventory at falling prices.

Key parameters are the range bounds, the number of grid levels, and the investment per level. More levels mean smaller profit per fill but more frequent fills; fewer levels mean bigger swings between triggers. Fees matter โ€” if the profit per rung doesn't exceed round-trip fees, the bot trades often and loses slowly.

Grid bots aren't set-and-forget. A range that made sense last month may be meaningless after a breakout. Check in periodically: is price still inside your grid? Is the range still where the market is actually trading?

Dexana's grid bots report every fill and show your effective buy/sell prices in real time, so you can see the harvested spread instead of guessing.
